On October 14th, we co-sponsored brain games at a local brewery, Fullsteam, with American Underground and Indy Weekly to raise money for a great organization, Crayons2Calculators. C2C's mission is to serve the educational and creative needs of students in the Durham Public School system by providing free school supplies to classroom teachers and is also an organization we volunteer with during our quarterly team days.
The night started with seven insanely hard rounds of trivia that included categories such as,Crayons2Calculators, Durham history, investing, and law and ended with a paper airplane contest. Individual round categories were sponsored by Museum of Durham History / Durham Chamber of Commerce, Bagchi Law and Idea Fund Partners.
There were 8 teams competing for the honor of being the brainiest, but the title went to Shoeboxed a local company that specializes in receipt scanning and expense tracking for businesses. Other competitors included Archive Social, Crayons2Calculators, CrowdTunes, CodeForDurham, MoveLoot, Mercury Labs, and yours truly (we came in 5th).
"This year as a result of the tremendous outpouring of supplies from the Fill That Bus drive C2C has been able to increase our services to schools. But substantial growth has an impact on our operations costs which require undesignated funds. Brain Games donation of $4500 will cover all our utilities for 2014-15 as well as enabling us to upgrade some of our extremely outdated technology. While this may not be as glamorous as purchasing supplies, perhaps no one understands the importance of funding for operations costs and technology better than the start-up community." - Executive Director, Julie Marshall
We were able to raise $4,500 for Crayons2Calculators for this event. A huge thank you to everyone who participated, sponsored and donated!
Below are some photos from the event and a video of MoveLoot's awesome throw during the paper airplane flying contest.
A special note of thanks goes to Mellow Mushroom @ATC for all the pizzas and FullSteam for the space and 10% of proceeds that evening.
