My name is Joseph Bassey! I am a rising senior at Duke University, majoring in economics. The son of two Nigerian immigrants (now American citizens), I was born and raised in the great city of Los Angeles, CA. And YES I am a Lakers fan! I am a first generation college student as well as a first generation basketball fanatic. I’ve both watched and played for as long as I can remember.

There is just no doubt! I was the varsity basketball team captain in my senior year of high school and this past Spring I became a Duke intramural basketball champion! When I am not playing or watching basketball, I’m learning acoustic guitar, hanging out with friends, or trying my hand at new recipes. If I had to eat one food for the rest of my life, it would be iyan with afang soup, a Nigerian dish (ask and I’ll tell you all about it).
I love stories—the stories of people around me, children story books, intricate movie plots, you name it! And it is this passion for stories that sparked my interest in marketing. I believe every consumer and every business has a story to tell and at the heart of effective marketing is the ability to comprehend and convey the messages that define these stories. I aspire to serve as a mediator in this conversation between consumers and retailers, one who critically analyzes the consumer market and enables firms to tell their stories honestly and in a manner that integrates the very needs and demands of their consumers.
